How to read this page

  1. The list below is a path, not a table of contents. This is how somebody who cannot see the page moves through it: press Tab, land on the next stop, and so on to the end.
  2. Each line is a name and then a role — «Search, button». The name is what the author called it; the role is what the browser knows by itself. Nothing else reaches the voice: not colour, not size, not what is drawn next to it.
  3. And here is a line with no name. The author never named it, so the element has nothing of its own to say — and the line under it tells you what a reader falls back on instead: the address, the chosen option, a file name. Silence and an address are different experiences, and you hear whichever this one is.
  4. The numbers are about this page and this day. Pictures are not in the list of stops — a keyboard does not land on them — but a voice reads them when it gets there. The site is alive: tomorrow the numbers are different, which is why the date sits next to them.
  5. What we do not claim: this is not a recording of NVDA or VoiceOver. We press Tab exactly as you would and take every name from the browser itself — none of them is our guess. The path was then compared against both readers on real machines, and where they disagree with each other, which happens, the page says so.
  6. That is the whole thing. «Listen» reads the path aloud; «Another page» moves to the next of ten measured sites — your own is not among them, these are prepared measurements; «Copy this» puts one line of numbers and a date into the clipboard.

The walk was compared against two real screen readers on 2026-08-23: VoiceOver on macOS and NVDA on Windows. They do not always agree with each other, and where they differ we say so.

What this is, exactly

The walk is made by pressing Tab, exactly as a person does, and every name comes from the browser itself — we compute none of them. It is not a recording of NVDA or VoiceOver; those two add heuristics of their own and disagree with each other. Each page carries the date it was measured. Walking can also reveal controls that were not there at the start: focusing a menu opens it, and its items join the path — which is why the keyboard sometimes reaches more stops than the page had when it opened.
