Share of shelf: what it means and how to calculate it

Share of shelf tells you how much of a category's shelf your brand holds. It is usually counted in front-row facings: your facings divided by all the facings in the category, times 100. The calculator below takes your numbers and the chain's norm.

Facing is in a closed pilot, set up around your team.

What you get

  1. The formula: your front-row facings divided by all front-row facings in the category, times 100. Example: 7 of 45 is 16 %.
  2. By facings or by length: when the chain sets its norm in metres of shelf, count width instead. Facing keeps both.
  3. Share of shelf is not share of market: market is what sells, shelf is what the shopper sees.
  4. Only the front row counts. The packs behind it are invisible to the shopper.
  5. In Facing one photo of the shelf gives the share against the chain's norm, to the merchandiser and in the office.

Questions and answers

Do facings at the back count?

No, only the front row. The shopper never sees the depth.

What if the photo is unclear?

Low confidence, too few packs or an angled shot gives the numbers without a verdict, so nobody acts on a guess.

What does Facing cost?

€55 per active merchandiser a month billed yearly, or €65 month to month. Office seats are free, with no minimum and no annual contract.
